Easy ways to increase penile erection in man with erectile dysfunction (ED)

I have followed the following ways to increase the erection function. Please read the basic physiology/pathology of erection and erectile dysfunction so as to have a better understanding and better cure of your condition.

The penile erection in males is largely governed by vascular health because the erection and flaccidity of penis is dependent upon blood flow and trapping of that blood inside the spongy penile tissue. The blood vessels should have appropriate elasticity to do this job. This elasticity is mediated by several mechanisms. Among them, nitric oxide (Chemical formula: NO) is important in mediating penile erection. This nitric oxide molecule is generated by the blood vessel (vascular endothelium) itself. Therefore, bad vascular condition will impair the synthesis of nitric oxide. Furthermore, nitric oxide is short-lived (decompose in few seconds). Antioxidant (endogenous and exogenous) molecules protect nitric oxide from decomposing quickly. Therefore, decreased levels of antioxidants in the body will cause less availability of nitric oxide subsequently leading to erectile dysfunction.

So, what causes decrease of antioxidants in body?

The core answer is inflammation and other related processes will lead to the decrease of antioxidant defense in the body.

Oh.. What causes inflammation in body?

Several chronic diseases/disorders cause inflammation and related processes to rise in the body such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hyperlipidemia, and psychological stress disorders such as anxiety, depression etc. Even in people without these disorders, many young persons have metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome also has inflammatory component in it. Many appear-to be healthy people have insulin resistance. Insulin increases nitric oxide production. So, insulin resistance (cells resist the normal levels of insulin; so higher levels of insulin are required to transport glucose into cells and transport amino acids into skeletal muscle cells). Insulin resistance appears to be a starting point in many people who develop erectile dysfunction as insulin resistance seems to be starting problem for diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. Insulin resistance appears to linked with inflammation.

Then, how to reduce inflammation and decrease insulin resistance?

No perfect medicine is available as of now. Various lifestyle modifications and supplements are recommended to decrease inflammation and insulin resistance. Exercise is the best in this category. Moderate aerobic exercise and weight training are recommended. Avoid heavy and strenuous exercises as it will increase oxidative stress and inflammation.

What should I eat/avoid?

a. Avoid refined sugar, white bread/white rice - these foods increase oxidative stress in body

b. Avoid high fat food - these foods increase oxidative stress in body

c. Eat low low glycemic foods and low-insulinemic foods.

d. Do fasting for at least 12 hours a day. Practice this regularly or in weekends. Consume all your food within 12 hours window and fast during the remaining 12 hours of a day. You can take water. But, strictly no calories.

c. Eat more antioxidants/take supplements

Hmm...I am already following one or more of the above recommendations. What supplements can I take further?

1. Consumption of vitamin C

I have taken 250 mg - 500 mg vitamin C daily 2-3 times after the food. It increases body heat and erection. If this works for you, probably you can assume that you have insulin resistance and inflammation in your body.

2. Folic acid

I have taken 1 mg - 3 mg of folic acid one time daily. This increases my mood and when combined with vitamin C gave better erections.

3. Multivitamin tablets/capsules

I usually take a multivitamin tablet/capsule everyday as it helps to reduce the inflammation and improve the general well-being feeling. Multivitamin with ginseng worked for me earlier. Nowadays, it is not working.

4. DL-phenylalanine

250 mg-500 mg of DL-phenylalanine increased the erections.

My cold intolerance - Vitamin D3 Cholecalciferol increases tolerance to cold

My general condition is that I used to feel more cold in airconditioned places where similarly aged and similarly dressed people feel normal. I suspected that it may be due to hypothyroidism. However, my thyroid hormones levels are nor very abnormal. Moreover, supplementation with thyroxin 25 mcg per day did not produce any improvement in cold intolerance condition.

I have taken Vitamin D3 cholecalciferol 2000 I.U. chewable tablets 1 tablet/per day after the breakfast. It has increased my tolerance to cold temperature especially the office air conditioning. I have not taken any other medication during this time. The effect is visible from the second dose itself.

Positive effects:

1. Increased tolerance to cold

2. Reduced frequency of urination - (suggesting a steroid-like effect)

3. Reduced the appearance of under-eye dark circles.

4. Improved the focus and concentration slightly

5. Reduced the muscle pain and hand pain associated with mouse use

Negative effects:

1. Although I could sleep and wake up early to go to office on time, there is a sleep debt.

2. Slightly increased stuttering

Update on 7 Jan 2021

1. I observed three things with respect to cold tolerance/intolerance. If I skip my breakfast, I feel more cold.

2. If I do simple walking for 30 minutes duration in night time around 8.30 pm when the temperature is around 15 - 18 deg C, I feel more warm. During the walking I wear sweater and after returning my house, I can wear only normal T-shirt for 1-2 hours where the room temperature is around 15 deg C.

3. After I eat food (lunch/dinner), within 15 minutes, I feel more cold.

The above observations indicate that my cold tolerance has some connection with my blood circulation. After eating, more blood flow is diverted to stomach and intestine area. Therefore, other areas of the body receive less blood flow. Less blood flow means less heat exchange and more cold intolerance. Exercise such as walking for 30 minutes improves blood flow to all parts of the body. More blood flow, more heat exchange and more warm feeling.

Therefore, I need to do appropriate exercises to improve my blood circulation to avoid cold intolerance.

Update on 23 Dec 2023:

Daily consumption of ginger tea, masala tea, multivitamin tablet (supradyn multivitamin), and daily elliptical training for 20 minutes increases cold tolerance.

Effect of folic acid

After stopping centrum energy (contains ginseng extract 40 mg), I have taken folic acid 1 mg daily at night after the meals. I am not taking any other drug/supplements. After stopping centrum energy, I have taken ginger coffee (added commercial ginger paste to coffee) morning and evening for two days. This caused left sided headache suggesting decreased serotonergic neurotransmission. After I stopped ginger intake, that headache disappeared. Taking ginseng for 1 month might have caused increased serotonergic neurotransmission.

Positive effects (probably due to increased doapminergic neurotransmission secondary to disinhibition by serotonergic neurotransmission):

1.  Increased speed of brain processing - I am able to read complex things and understand better and able to remain focused in a long conversation (more than 1 hour). I am able to do things at a faster rate.

2. Decreased post lunch sleepiness

3. Increased libido and strong erections

4. Increased loudness of voice and no hoarseness of voice even after talking for long time.

5. Decreased mucous formation in nose while eating. This increased mucous formation happens whenever I eat lunch despite the food is not spicy and hot. This increased mucous formation may be due to increased cholinergic drive secondary to disinhibition by dopaminergic neurotransmission.

Negative effects:

1. Slight stuttering

2. Slight feelings of stress

3. Increased cold feeling - reduced tolerance to cold climate

Effect of centrum energy

I have consumed centrum energy multivitamin for past 1 month. This is a general multivitamin with ginseng extract 50 mg and ginkgo biloba 60 mg.

Positive effects:

1. No depressed and anxiety feelings

2. Slightly increased focus and concentration to engage in works

Negative effects:

1. Decreased libido

2. No deep focus and concentration enough to understand new concepts

3. Slightly increased hand pain

Effects of Magensium

I have taken magnesium at night after dinner (200 mg of magnesium from vitabiotics brand; They have not mentioned what form of magnesium is present in the tablet. They just mentioned only elemental magnesium 200 mg) for last few days and found my muscle pain and hand pain decreased substantially. However, the focus and concentration decreased very much with magnesium consumption at night. So, I have changed the timing to morning after breakfast and observing.

Hoarse voice, Sore throat, Vitamin C and Electrolytes

I usually get hoarse voice and/OR sore throat if i talk for few hours at a stretch or if i lecture with loud volume for 1 hour. This could be due to easy bruising of throat muscles and vocal cards and less hydration of throat muscles and vocal cards.

The possible solutions/treatments to these problems can be as follows:

1. Take vitamin C
2. Stay hydrated - Take electrolyte solutions before lecture

Update on 20 Sep 2020:
Folic acid may be helpful. Please see the effect of folic acid in another post.

Easy ways to increase libido

I have followed the following practices to increase the libido. Sure, these practices increased libido. The effectiveness of the practice is given in the descending order.

1. Increased carbohydrate intake - rice or wheat

This practice increases good mood and libido. Many people, due to dieting, decrease their carbohydrate intake. This practice decreased my mood and libido. So, increased carbohydrate levels increased my libido.

2. Eat eggs daily

Take 2 eggs in the morning and 2 eggs in the evening. This practice increased my libido very much. Half-boiled eggs gave maximum benefit. Alternatively, the eggs can be mixed with chopped onions (small red onion-South Indian variety) and prepared as omelette and consumed.

3. Eat mutton and chicken weekly 2 times each

This practice increased my libido very good. I consumed mutton one day followed by chicken, then followed by mutton and chicken. This order can be continuous or can be with other type of meals in between.

4. Walking for 30 minutes - 2 hours per day

In my experience, 30 minute walking is not that much effective. At least, 1 hour of walking improved my libido.

5. Taking supplements

Supplements such as folic acid, ginseng, general multivitamin, DL-phenylalanine increased my libido. This whole blog is about my trial and error on this practice. It is not easy to find a suitable supplement. This requires lot of trial and error. Sometimes, it requires taking supplements with unusual dosing regimens such as taking them on alternate days.

Effect of probiotics

I have taken Alesa capsules (Please see the composition below) for last 5 days. Also, I was taking a calcium, magnesium, zinc tablet (Osteocare) for my hand pain (due to laptop mouse usage - work from home - covid 19) and a multivitamin tablet (Diabetone).

Osteocare - 1 tablet in morning
Alesa - 1 capsule in lunch
Diabetone - 1 capsule in lunch

Positive effects

1. First day good mood occurred - after that slowly the happiness declined. But, no feelings of sadness.
2. I am able to remain engaged in a work - sometimes with focus and sometimes without focus and concentration. This resulted in more productive output.
3. No afternoon sleepy feelings.

Negative effects:

1. Stomach bloating happens when Alesa was taken in night.
2. Mild shortness of breath happens.
3. Not much focus or concentration. But, remain engaged in a work leads to completion of work and produces output.
4. Felt cold sometimes

Effects of methyl cobalamin

For the last three months, I am not taking any multivitamins. I have developed right hand pain (due to laptop mouse usage), low back pain (probably due to poor sitting posture and sleeping on foam mattress which forms body impressions) and gluteal muscles pain (probably due to poor sitting posture). So, I tried taking methylcobalamin 500 micrograms once daily for 4 days (two days taken at night and two days taken at morning).

Positive effects:

1. Reduction of hand pain and low back pain
2. Little relaxed mind
3. Tendency to watch movies, listen to music

Negative effects:

1. Not getting sleep in the night - but if I sleep, unable to get up easily.
2. No focus or concentration to do any job - simple jobs took may hours to complete
3. No motivation and energy to do any job.
4. Not able to think deeply - postponement of few tasks
5. No attention to details - errors happened in work
6. Decreased speed of information processing while driving

30 hours after the last dose of methylcobalamin, I felt return of energy and focus.
